K, age 6, is considered a slow learner; she was slow to crawl, walk and talk. According to her speech therapist, her speech level was of a 2 year old. K also has sensory processing & behavior issues.
K was my case study for the Special Needs for Children course. Over the span of 10 home sessions, I worked on K with the individual protocol I created. In addition, I trained her mom to be able to take over doing the work as K would need ½ hour sessions several times per week.
K’s sensory issues meant she did not always like her face to be touched for any length of time. To accommodate her sensitivity, creativity was needed to perform some of the face work. Even with not being able to always do the full session, K’s mom did notice some positive changes, such as; “she has more to say and at times strings 2 or 3 words together”, “usually going to the store with K is difficult, but the other day she behaved very well and listened to me” and “she played nicely for 2 hours at the park”. Mom looks forward to more positive changes in K as she continues doing the face reflex therapy.
